Historic District of Port Warehouses -a Walk to the Past

The district of port warehouses in Hamburg is called Venice on the Elbe. Here, too, there are channels, and a complex of warehouse buildings of red brick of the end of the XIX century stretches for a km instead of the old houses. For their construction it was necessary to demolish the houses of the XVI - XVII centuries that stood here: the port city needed space for warehouses. The establishment of the district was so important for Hamburg, that Emperor Wilhelm II was invited for the blessing of the warehouses, who solemnly laid the last stone. Today it is a trendy district in which the buildings house offices and museums, including the Warehouse Museum (Speicherstadtmuseum). The Museum has a small exhibition on products- coffee, tea, spices and rubber – that were stored in the warehouses.
